The Importance of a Baby Night Time Routine

Having a baby is one the most wonderful yet confusing times of your life. You often find yourself questioning every decision you make. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. Which makes you even more confused.

The top question that every parent seems to have is:

Short Stories

When will my baby sleep through the night?

The Importance of a Baby Night Time Routine

This maybe because it is the number one thing people ask; is your baby sleeping through the night? Or it maybe because it is so unnatural for us as children and adults not to sleep during the night hours and anything different, is well just a little crazy.

Sleeping through the night really depends on the baby but is generally around 5 hours. Don't panic if your baby does not do this yet! They will eventually and baby will only benefit from your calm attitude and low expectations. Do not worry about what anyone else says.

Newborns tend to sleep a lot but it shorter patches. By the time that they are a preschooler their sleeping habits have completely changed and it can be a shock to get used to either way.

Try and get your newborn and baby into the nighttime bedtime routine straight away. Babies do not like upheaval or change and they prefer knowing what is about to happen. This is true even when they are a toddler and a preschooler and it can get them into good sleeping habits when they are even older.

It doesn't really matter what routine you do, as long as it is relatively the same every night. There are some nights it just won't work for various reasons but if the majority of the evenings can have a routine, this will help tremendously.

A sample routine for baby: (just the order, not the times, that is up to you)

Dinner Bath time Changed into sleepwear (ensure this is done in bedroom with curtains closed, dim lights and not in the hubbub and noise of the rest of the house) Evening feed (if applicable) Gentle short stories, either made up or read from a book Kiss, cuddles and night night

This can be adjusted as the baby grows and requirements change.

One more tip; do not watch the clock. Babies and toddlers will sense this it will end up taking you twice as long.

Good Luck
