The Story of Aladdin

The story of Aladdin is an old Arabic story, with unknown origins. Its first appearance in print was in The Book of One Thousand and One Nights - a compendium of Arabic, Persian and Indian myths and legends, and the same book that gave us Ali Baba and Sinbad. The name 'Aladdin' is actually 'Ala ad-Din', and the story probably came from Syria.

The version of Aladdin that was written down in 1709 is largely the one that we know today, although there are a few key differences. Aladdin, a poor young man, is sent by a sorcerer to get a magic lamp from a cave - but isn't told that it's protected by a curse. Angry at the lie, Aladdin keeps the lamp, and finds that a genie lives inside who can grant him wishes. He uses this power selfishly, to become rich and marry a princess, but his new wife, not knowing the lamp's power, gives it away to the sorcerer.

Short Stories

When the sorcerer uses his new power to take Aladdin's wife and riches, Aladdin is reduced to nothing. However, he still has a ring that the sorcerer gave him before he went in the cave, and the ring is capable of summoning another, less powerful genie. With this new genie's help, Aladdin defeats the sorcerer.

The Story of Aladdin

As you can see, the start is familiar, but the ending is probably quite different to what you've heard. There are other elements that are left out entirely from modern re-tellings - Aladdin is cheated by a Jew and then helped by a Muslim at one point, for example, which is now seen as incredibly anti-semitic.

Regardless, the overall meaning of the story is clear. When Aladdin uses the lamp to get riches and marry the princess for the first time, he has not truly earned them. It is only once he has been through a struggle and proven his worth that he can be entitled to his new position.

The Importance of a Baby Night Time Routine

Having a baby is one the most wonderful yet confusing times of your life. You often find yourself questioning every decision you make. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. Which makes you even more confused.

The top question that every parent seems to have is:

Short Stories

When will my baby sleep through the night?

The Importance of a Baby Night Time Routine

This maybe because it is the number one thing people ask; is your baby sleeping through the night? Or it maybe because it is so unnatural for us as children and adults not to sleep during the night hours and anything different, is well just a little crazy.

Sleeping through the night really depends on the baby but is generally around 5 hours. Don't panic if your baby does not do this yet! They will eventually and baby will only benefit from your calm attitude and low expectations. Do not worry about what anyone else says.

Newborns tend to sleep a lot but it shorter patches. By the time that they are a preschooler their sleeping habits have completely changed and it can be a shock to get used to either way.

Try and get your newborn and baby into the nighttime bedtime routine straight away. Babies do not like upheaval or change and they prefer knowing what is about to happen. This is true even when they are a toddler and a preschooler and it can get them into good sleeping habits when they are even older.

It doesn't really matter what routine you do, as long as it is relatively the same every night. There are some nights it just won't work for various reasons but if the majority of the evenings can have a routine, this will help tremendously.

A sample routine for baby: (just the order, not the times, that is up to you)

Dinner Bath time Changed into sleepwear (ensure this is done in bedroom with curtains closed, dim lights and not in the hubbub and noise of the rest of the house) Evening feed (if applicable) Gentle short stories, either made up or read from a book Kiss, cuddles and night night

This can be adjusted as the baby grows and requirements change.

One more tip; do not watch the clock. Babies and toddlers will sense this it will end up taking you twice as long.

Good Luck
